Why does the public feel so estranged from contemporary art?

I love the article that Lisa posted yesterday. Makes me want to buy the book.

The question that stuck with me the most was

Why does the public feel so estranged from contemporary art?

I would like to leave it at that and encourage anyone who may have some insight to post in our comments.

As a "non-artist," I think I can weigh in on this subject. I love art, but I - like most people - am not armed with the vocabulary to talk about it with any eloquence whatsoever. I can say that I like something, but I really couldn't tell you why. I get the feeling that the artists themselves want and need some sort of validation that I am unable to give without this vocabulary - and because of this I am just another person nodding her head saying "that's nice." So I just go in to my little corner and appreciate from afar.

In addition, there are people everywhere telling the public what is and is not good. This gives the impression that in appreciating art, there is a "correct answer" - and there will be CONSEQUENCES for thinking the wrong way. Also.

I'm finger quoting more than Chris Farley here.

This is a really great blog, by the way. Thanks for sharing it with me!

Thank you so much for your comments. I can see the finger quoting now (:

I hope to break down the need for certain words and vocabulary for artists and the art world. There have been plenty of times I can't find the words to describe how I feel about an artwork. I say, that's why it's visual art, the artist doesn't have the words either.

It does take some practice and it does take not worrying about the words that come out of your mouth--just letting them flow.

That is hard to do when you are being stared at by a group of people that set themselves up to look "art smart" I've encountered that a great deal. It's an easy train to ride...

I hope this blog is a safe haven for honest opinions and thoughts about art work. No judgment, just dialog. I hope you feel as though your opinion counts here...whatever words you use to say it.

Thanks!
